The Baptism
The Baptism
2010
24 x 36
Acrylic on canvas
I created this piece while listening to a sermon at church on the baptism of Jesus. The sermon was from Luke 3:21 in the Bible. During the sermon the pastor showed a video of his baptism in the Jordan River, which gave me a good sense of the location. As the sermon progressed I created a sketch that became a painting. In Luke 3:21, the scripture says heaven opened up and dove descended in a bodily form. The passage painted and image in my mind. There are many numerical symbols in this piece such as: 16 rivets in the shell represent John 3:16, 10 swirls on either side of the shell represent the 10 commandments, 3 branches on the far sides of the painting represent the trinity and the third chapter of Luke. In the water you can see two swirls. One swirl is representative of Jesus and the other of John the Baptist.

As I began this painting for Nathaniel, a new-born baby boy, I opened the Bible for Inspiration. I turned almost immediately to Romans 1:20. As I read the verse I envisioned the painting.
“For Since the creation of the World God’s invisible qualities-His eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”
-Romans 1:20
The words that inspired me were: creation, invisible qualities, divine nature, clearly. I envisioned a series of clear “glass-like” tiles making up the painting. Behind each tile were representations of creation. I tied the elements of creation to Nathaniel’s bedding. I also embedded the trinity into one of the tiles that represented trees, fruits, and flowers. I also used the Lion and the Lamb to represent the creation of animals, but also to represent our Savior Jesus Christ. Originally, I planned to incorporate small, white lines much like a blue print-the blue print of God. It would have especially worked since the painting was mainly blue.

Custom painting I created for a collector.
This was a commissioned piece I created based on the individual’s love of frogs and lily pads. This particular painting is unique in the sense that I began a new “signature” in this piece. I wanted to create a hidden image that is noticeable in the original art. It is an embossed square layered under the paint. It adds texture, interest and originality to my artwork. The square is representative of perfection and the fact that I paint for God’s glory.

This is one of my favorite paintings for many reasons. I completed this painting while I was in my senior year of high school. I think this painting best demonstrates the true beginning of my style as a painter. I enjoyed painting the true colors that were before me. In creating this painting, I wanted to take a symbolic piece of my high school with me. I painted the palm tree in front of my school. It represents the warm, tropical environment of my hometown-also represented by the warm-colored background. The cool colors in the palms leaves represent the melancholy feelings of leaving behind high school and starting a new beginning. The inside of the tree appears to be burning, which is the sort of feeling I had inside.

I created this still life as a study on fruits, vegetables, and reflective qualities of glass. The bottle of Barq’s root bear represents my hometown. Barq’s is a staple in Gulf Coast traditions and cuisine and it was even created near my hometown, New Orleans.

This painting is an interpretation of the song “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffett. I used to listen to this song with my father during the good times. In the background I cast a dark scene representing the mostly dark times in our relationship. The other items in the still life represent the fun times that we shared together, even though they were few and far between.

This work is an exploration of mixed media in my art. I also enjoy jewelry making and some of that medium is represented here. The rose represents how love can bring us out of the darkness in our live. The series of squares represent past, present, future and beyond.
Post Katrina Still Life
Post Katrina Still Life

Acrylic on canvas
Me and my husband rode out Hurricane Katrina in his parents home a mile north of our home in Gulfport, MS, where the storm center hit. We were trapped in the home with little food and water. Gas was not available so we could not travel home to see our damaged property. Communication was not available either. With no way to contact loved ones and nothing to do because there was no gas or electricity, the only thing we could do was swelter in the scorching heat and go crazy, or vent my stress into a work of art. I chose to paint a still life. The sunflowers represent the dependency of life on water (water was a scarce necessity during this time). The window represents a need for escape. The chair represents time, all we could do is sit and wait. The contrast of dark and light represent how unexpected and how quickly life can change. The vegetables represent a limited food supply. The bowl represents relying on God and his angels (white figures in the bowl) to get us through this.

As a young girl, I admired my much older brother, Al. Often times I mispronounced his name as “owl.” There were even a couple of paintings in my home of owls that further created this “symbol” to represent my brother. My brother struggled throughout much of his life, dealing with emotional pain from an abused and tormented upbringing. Eventually, the pain he held inside lead to him taking his life. The painting represents bondage to the emotional stress he carried. The owl represents him and is part of my fascination with chrome and reflections. It also represents his ability to shine on others despite his circumstances. He always liked to make others happy.

Fused Glass
My glass pieces are an exploration into a new medium. Turns out, I love the medium and I plan to do more in the future as I am able to. The pieces represent an abstraction of an ocean scene. Blue and green are my favorite colors which I represented in these pieces. I have a strong connection to the ocean. I love the peacefulness and mystery it evokes and I tried to represent it here in these two pieces. I wanted to create two similar pieces with different techniques. Into The Blue I is a little larger and is a full-fuse glass piece. Into The Blue II is a tack-fuse glass piece.

Mixed Media on canvas
Contrast is the key element in this piece. The canvas is divided into two sections that are totally opposite: one light and soft and the other dark and rigid. This represents two different lives there are meshed together. Along the area where they meet appears to be series of rings. These rings are actually hearts that have not lined up. The diagonal line represents the slow slide and decline of the relationship as it slips away.

I created this still life focused the linear form of the red flowers, leaves and shadows. I focused on keeping the painting loose, as well. This was a new way for me to paint a still life, hence the name. Notice the signature square in this piece...it really anchors the piece for me!

This painting is inspired by a homeless man who is an artist in Atlanta, Georgia. His name is Jack. I met Jack while serving on a missions trip in Atlanta. I saw him there every night on the floor of the fellowship hall of the church. He showed me his art that he sold on the streets. He is an amazing artist who had hope among the many trials that life had dealt him. Jack created his lively and positive art sending a message of God’s hope. He has forever inspired me with his style and there will always be a piece of Jack in my art to come. The colorful and patterned sky in this work has lead to a style that I plan to use in paintings to come.

This painting came about from an inspirational image in my mind after reading scripture from psalms. My focus was on two iconic images representing my talent as a gift from God, and me wanting to give the glory back to Him. I envisioned flowers grouped together in a three-dimensional form. It evokes a feeling of lightness and comfort; the way I feel in His presence-totally embraced. I plan to create more versions of this three-dimensional form in the future.

Destin Waves

acrylic on canvas
In this painting, I focused on the linear aspects of the waves. I layered the colors in a series of lines until I achieved the look I was trying to create. I am very excited with this painting. Looking at it makes me feel like I am watching the waves churn on a rough day in Destin Florida.
Landing in a New World

This painting is a response to 2 Corinthians 5:17. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. I used wires around the edges of the painting as well as extra texture. There is a beautiful sense of peace and lightness in this painting. The ball of flowers represnts the presence of God to me in this painting. Notice my signiture square that is clinging to the figure of flowers.

This painting represents how God weaves us together piece by piece with intent. It also represents the beauty of life and shortness of life. We should bloom for God while here on earth and further His Kingdom(represented by the flowers falling from the tree to a flower covered hill. The three circular figures represent the trinity. Notice my signature square embedded in the sphere.
Three to The Third

mixed media on canvas
2010
The "three" represents the trinity and also me, my mom and my brother. The three circlular figures represent God, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Alos, there are three butterflies on the top right corner. I painted them to appear as if they are disappering. Our time here on earth is limited, but we have eternity to spend in heaven together with God.
